SCROLL DOWN FOR 2009 AND PRIOR YEARS
Chanslor Coho Project
December 29th and 30th, 2009 - SECOND COHO SALMON STOCKING
The California Department of Fish and Game will repeat the stocking
of approximately 300 breeding size coho salmon at Chanslor Ranch done on December 12th, 2008.  That effort was successful and we
look forward to equal success this year.
September 09, 2009 - NEW HOSPITALITY PROVIDER AT CHANSLOR
Chanslor Wildlife will continue to operate the leasehold at Chanslor
Ranch through 2011 under a new agreement signed withy Chanslor Ranch LLC in order to give sufficient time to develop the financial support for the proposed Chanslor Land Trust.  Chanslor Wildlife will continue to operate the environmental education and conservation programs on the property and a new stable operator has been
leased the equestrian facility.
August 15, 2009 - CHANSLOR LAND TRUST BEING FORMED
Chanslor Wildlife is in the process of forming a land trust to provide permanent protection for Chanslor Ranch which will incorporate a protective easement on 330 acres of the property including significant
wetland and archaelogical sites.  Unique to the Chanslor Land Trust will be the goal of providing environmental education for both schools and the general public.
August 07, 2009 - Estuary Trail Section Completed
Really super effort by the 4 teams from West County Community Services Summer Job Program allowed 2,000 feet of interpretive trail used for K-12 students to be completed in the last 6 weeks.  An additional two week extension of the program will bring the the total to approximately 3,000 feet.  This has been one of the most successful youth programs which Chanslor Wildlife has ever been involved in.
We really appreciate working with WCCS.
July  26, 2009 - Night Light Study
A study is underway using the new modular wildlife observation stations at  Chanslor Ranch to monitor the affect of various types of man made light sources on predators at night.  This study is anticipated to be submitted to UC Berkeley as part of a graduate
study.  Various study sites have been established which will cover
a wide diversity of habitat and types of predators and is anticipated
to be a two year study.
July  21, 2009 - University of Winnipeg Deer Study
Doctoral candidates Mr. Kyle Antontchuk of Canada and Sopie Stahlberg of Sweden are conducting the evolution of anti predator behavior of coastal blacktail deer as part of a study for Dr. Susan Lingle, biologist with the University of Winnipeg.  This is part of a larger study covering several species of deer including whitetail and mule deer.  Chanslor Ranch has a substantial population of coastal blacktail deer.  This is anticipated to be a multi-year study.
July 2, 2009 - Juvenile coho salmon in Fey Creek
In December of 2008 (see below) Chanslor Wildlife participated in the re-introduction of breeding size coho salmon into Salmon Creek on Chanslor Ranch where coho salmon have not been observed for 14 years.  It appears that these salmon did successfully spawn upstream in Fey Creek.  The fabulous picture on the left was taken by
Joe Pecharich, Fisheries Biologist/Habitat Restoration Specialist
NOAA Restoration Center.

June 18, 2009 - Wildlife Observation Structures
Tortoise Shell Homes is preparing the initial two Camp Cubes for
the Chanslor Wildlife Project with delivery anticipated for July 1st.
These units include alternative energy supply and are expected
to be available for member use July 4th.
May 29, 2009 - Wildlife Structures
Design plans have been finalized with Tortoise Shell Homes for two models of wildlife observation units which Chanslor Wildlife will have available for members beginning on July 1st and which will be supplied by Codding Steel Frame Solutions division of Codding Enterprises, Rohnert Park, CA.  While these mobile units will facilitate our Wildlife Members enjoying the Sonoma Coast year round, they are also test beds for alternative energy programs and gray water systems as well as new photography stations on the property.  .
May 13, 2009 - Sonoma County Eco Corp Program
West County Community Services has been selected by Sonoma County to administer the Summer Eco Corp program at Chanslor Ranch.  This substantial program will involve job training and environmental education at Chanslor Ranch using Federal stimulus dollars.  Among the projects will be the reconstruction of approximately 5,000 feet of interpretive trail, removal of invasive plant species and replanting of native plants.  West County Community Services is a 501c3 non-profit with which Chanslor Wildlife began working in 1996 on education programs for Sonoma County Youth.
Chanslor Wildlife has been designated a 'high quality' program by
Sonoma County based on the education component to the program.
April 23, 2009 - Chanslor Cattle Ranching
Funding has been obtained for the construction of two 3,500 sf barns
to be part of an expanded cattle operation at Chanslor Ranch.
Currently grass fed Galloway beef is produced at Chanslor.  With
new facilities the herd will be increased to include Black Angus and
Scottish Highlanders.  Cattle will be maintained at Chanslor and also
at a 125 acre property in Marin County just south of Bodega Bay.

Agriculture is intended to be an increased source of funding for Chanslor Wildlife's environmental programs and sustainable ranching will be a demonstration program at Chanslor Ranch.
February 21,  2009 - Fish Shelters
The first of 12 underwater fish shelters have been installed in
Turtle Pond by Jon Daley, who is developing the fishing program.  They are designed to be used as 'structure' for both catfish and
bass and will provide some level of protection from the numerous predators which frequent the pond - from otters to osprey and
cormorant.
USDA Sediment Program
December 21, 2008 - Completion of Sediment Project
Phase 1 of the sediment control program with the United States
Dept of Agriculture has been completed.  This program involves approximately 3600 ft of  ranch pasture access trails and adjacent drainage ditch being upgraded to reduce sediment runoff into
Salmon Creek.  This upgrade is related to the Salmon Creek Estuary
Study completed in June 2006.  That three year study showed the significant damage to Salmon Creek caused by sediment.  The estuary is on Chanslor Ranch and our goal is to see that Chanslor
Ranch itself is not contributing to the on-going sediment problem.
Chester Gin of the USDA has worked with us since 2005 to put
together this agriculture program operated by Chanslor Wildlife.
